The South Dock District

The South Dock is one of the rougher section of the city. It overlooks the Rast River just west of Fisherman's Wharf. The South Dock is mainly the unloading point for river barge traffic. The barges bring livestock and commodities, and bargemen are notoriously tough customers. Smugglers and thieves take advantage of the less refined population to blend in, and City and Customs Watch send officers to this patrol area as a punishment. All of these factors combine to give the South Docks its "unique" flavor. Traveling alone on the streets after dark is not advised.

In addition to its tough population, the area is run-down and shabby. The livestock pens are right in the middle of the docks, and combine with fish smells from the Wharf to the east to give the docks a pungent odor which takes some getting used to. Street life is dominated by gangs of thugs that extract "protection" monies from the merchants, and can make just getting around a difficult task for normal folk. Armed groups of adventurers have fewer problems.

Location Key

1. Customs Watch House 4

The Customs Watch is hired by Lord Kilburg "The Merchant Prince." Prince Kilburg uses them to enforce the tariffs and collect dock fees. It is the main source of income for the crown. All of the Customs Watch report to Chief Constable Bregman, at Watch House 1, on the Mercantile Dock. Lieutenant Cedric Mariner and eight constables man Watch House 4.

The Customs Watch is often at odds with the City Watch, who are hired by the Guild Council. Their duties are to enforce the Guild laws and collect taxes within the city.

2. Boarding House

These are two of the nicer rooming houses in the South Docks area, and refuse to cater to adventurers. Often, borders are required to furnish references. Both are owned by Lucile LaFontana, a once infamous courtesan.

3. Kosvig Yards

The warehouse yards of the Kosvig Trading Coster. This coster is not well regarded or represented in the Guild Council. The family is in turmoil since the patriarch, Uto Kosvig, died suddenly, apparently of a massive heart attack. Three brothers -- Uttic, Yurge, and Samgric -- are trying to hold the family together, but are undermatched in Guild politics.

4. Narret Trading Company

An established trading company comprised of three families, and run by the capable Mesric Narret. The Narret Company specializes in textiles.

5. Kilburg Yards Yards

One of the warehouse yards for the trading company run by Lord Kilburg. Security here is tight

6. Argreeve's Armory

The largest store on the South Docks to purchase arms and armor. Argreeve's smiths are excellent, and his prices are fair. His smiths can forge almost any weapon, and specialize in making plate mail. His backlog of work is extensive, so expect to wait longer than normal for goods to be delivered.

7. Cattle Pens

Livestock that is shipped downriver by barge are stored here before being sold at market. Much of the commerce on the South Docks is in commodities, such as livestock, grain, and metal ore.

8. Blacksmith

This blacksmith supplies many of the weapon and tool heads (axes, hoes, etc.) that are manufactured in Rastgoth. Many of these worked goods are exported. Master Cassen, and four journeyman smiths work with several apprentices here.

9. Kilburg Warehouse

The commodities warehouse for the Kilburg Trading Consortium. All of the traffic in grain, livestock and ore comes through this warehouse. There is an office in the warehouse, managed by Jacob Miggit.

10. Waterfront Tavern

Kilburg's Waterfront Tavern is the only decent public house on the South Docks. As the name implies, it is owned by the Kilburg Trading Consortium, and caters mostly to workers at the Kilburg facilities on the South Docks.

11. Guild Grain Storage

The Guild Council maintains these granaries, and collects a fee to store grain at harvest time.

12. Savert Trading Company

Lord Aldus Savert, Baronet manages warehouses on both the South Dock and Mercantile Dock from this central location. He has a strong voice in Guild Council, and is rumored to be on the rise politically.

13. Livery Stable

One of the better locations in Rastgoth to obtain a mount.

14. Kallig's Infirmary

Kallig's Infirmary caters to all clients. Run by the elderly, but still powerful, Kallig Kronhour, this place is considered neutral ground by all of the nefarious citizens most likely to come to Kallig for healing.

In addition to providing healing, and other beneficial clerical spells, Kallig has a excellent steam room and bath. It is much more expensive than a public bath house, but well worth the price. Any one that respects the truce that Kallig has established is welcome in Kallig's. [ details » ]

15. Kitten's Den

A cheap house of ill-repute near the water front. Kitten pays heavy dues to the Mogley Family to keep trouble to a minimum. She pays heavy bribes to the City Watch for the inevitable trouble that starts anyway. [ details » ]

16. The Gutted Fish

At the far south end of the South Dock, almost in the Fisherman's Wharf area, the Gutted Fish is one of the worst taverns in Rastgoth. Almost every patron is a cutthroat, pirate, smuggler, or is some one looking to hire one. [ details » ]

The tavern is run by Larg Gnusman, a retired adventurer who walks with a permanent limp. He is rumored to be "Middle Management" in the local scene, and is said to lend his establishment to a number of the street gangs that run protection rackets in the area.

17. Dahlgrin's Ice House

In addition to creating ice (by magic, some whisper), Dahlgrin is known to pay cash for fresh monster corpses. Presumably he keeps them frozen. For what is not certain.
